Tool 11

My favorite tools are those that allow me to easily model for students a variety of media so that I can implement it right away.  I also want the immediate response from students so that if the content is not mastered I can reteach it as opposed to moving on through either text messaging in responses or having them post comments on my blog.

I think this eases my mind about incorporating technology.  Many of the applications are very user friendly that I do not feel overwhelmed or ill prepared to use immediately.  I plan on making several changes to allow content to be delivered in different manners.  This will allow me to change my lessons for the future.

Tool 10

1.  On being good digital citizens, I would want my students to know at least three things. I would want them to be safe when using the Internet, not only to avoid dangerous sites, but also to detect information bias by checking out the source of the information. Second, I would like the kids to operate friendly treating other students fairly, and without detractors, such as name-calling and spreading false rumors (cyberbullying). Lastly, I would want my students to be operate ethically on the Internet. Besides some of the previous things cited, students should not plagarize off of Internet sources or use it to convey unwanted personal or false details about other students.

2. I would probably use Digizen to theach the kids about being a good net citizen.

3. I would display Digizen on my ActivBoard for my students to watch before having them work on a project.

4. Regarding parents, I would share the idea of digital citizenship with my parents during Back to School Night each year. I would also note that this is in furtherance of the SBISD digital rights codes that every parent and student has signed.

Technology is very important to our learners today.  They are exposed everyday to such a wide range of technology that is at their fingertips.  I think that many of them are sometimes overwhelmed by the influx of different sources out there.  At the same time, most of the students know much more about the latest and greatest applications out there.  Technology allows students to innovate from their desks and with fellow students.  This is what creates great thinkers through a varied expression.

Students need to be held accountable to ensure that learning is taking place.  It is easy to still copy regardless if one is using technology or not.  If you do not ensure that the concepts are being mastered then the technology did not add any value to the lessons.

There are many avenues for using different apps.  I think in the beginning the most useful use of these apps will be for review purposes and creating visuals of learning.  By being able to combine the two I believe we will have a much higher percentage of students mastering content, in turn empowering the individual students.  Each station will have a quick assessment that will be used as a reteach lesson as well.  If they can master each level, progressively increasing the level of Bloom's, then success will be reached.

I am very excited about being able to have the students create videos, with other technology available on campus, and then edit the videos with the new devices.  This is what I am most interested in implementing next semester.  In geography we study very difficult issues, and the best way to demonstrate them is through PSA's.  Having students create them will build compassionate global citizens!

It appears as if it will take some time on my part to plan and sync each of the devices to my teacher laptop.  I think once this is done, the rest can be a learning experience for both the student and teacher as they maneuver through the device together.

I plan on posting clear expectations of proper use of technology and staying on task when using the devices.  I also plan on creating a contract on a Google Doc so that each student must go in and read and agree to the terms and conditions of the classroom use of technology.

I really enjoy giving students a variety of methods to demonstrate their mastery of the content.  This would be very helpful in creating projects.  Students love to use technology, and by having these tools that are easy to use and can be demonstrated quickly, they will not loose any time.

I really enjoy creating a word wall online.  Even though it does not have pictures, when they are printed and placed in their vocabulary folders, they can do so later.  This is a visual with basic words that will prompt them to think of larger concepts.

I would use wordle and puzzlemaker

1. Create at least one document in Google Docs and share it with a few others on your campus or within your department. It could a team member, a department colleague, or another teacher with whom you plan a collaboration. Ask that person to comment or chat and real-time edit the document with you.
Collaborating with two students, a Google doc was created over a unit on Issues of South Asia. The students enjoyed editing simultaneously with one another and I ultimately posted the document on my webpage.

2. Create one form in Google Docs and send it via email to at least two other people and ask them to respond.
The form I created in Google docs id the form discussed in number three below. I shared it with two colleagues for their viewing pleasure and to acquire feedback.

3. Briefly discuss how you can use the tools in Google Apps with your team or department. How can you incorporate Google Apps as a tool in your classroom? Which tools are you excited about using with students?
I tested out Google forms by creating a two question quiz for my students utilizing a multiple choice question format and a check box format. Click here to enjoy my quiz. Creating a unique background for the quiz will be an appealing aspect for students. I can see using this to gauge prior knowledge before beginning a new unit.
